Went to sunplaza for the usual sunday lunch thing.
I was just talking to grandpa about random things and he suddenly talked about CNY. (:
About the prices of food and the steamboat and the snacks and all that kinda thing. You know what? I am totally psyched for CNY cos its just about the one of the best things that happen during the year (besides my and goosie's birthday and of course, christmas)
We were talking and all and then i overheard my mom's friend commenting that i was very close to my grandpa and that we could talk and all that kinda thing. I asked myself if i was/am really close to him cos i only talk to him like once a week. It got me thinking about how i should be putting in the effort to spend time with him.
How i should put in the effort to do the things i say i wanna do.
Talking about CNY made me think about grandma again.
I remember how CNY used to be when grandma was still here. She'd always be so busy with everything trying to prepare the best meal ever. Like she'd be busy preparing the soup for the steamboat and the ngoh heong thingy. She'd make sure that there are enough quail eggs to go round cos kids really love those things. Also, she will cut the ba kuas into nice bite size pieces and she will always buy like 1kg for each of her kids. She'd always be super excited about the chinese new year count down show.
There was this particular chinese new year when they had reunion dinner at my house. We still had the maid at that time and it was hilarious. Like the maid went to boil the century egg instead of the salted egg and when grandma opened the pot she was like half laughing and half going to give the maid a good talking to because you cannot get anymore century eggs on CNY's EVE!
At grandpa's 70th birthday celebrations, there was this trio who walked around playing songs for people at the tables while they ate. Well, they played her favorite song and i remember how she was happily singing and clapping. She was leaning on me and asking me to sing along too. I can't seem to explain how i felt at that point in time but it was definitely a good feeling.
In '06, she came over to our place to celebrate her birthday and i bought her a sunflower. When she saw it she exclaimed how huge it was and was going on and on about how thick the stem of the thing was. We went to eat curry fish head after that. We were eating and then the drinks lady came over and she looked at me and asked if i would like to share a can of green tea with her.
She took english classes at the community club so that she could communicate better with us. When i called her she'd tell me about the funny things that happened during the class and how she enjoyed it.
I miss you grandma.
Here's to the best grandma in the world.
